Summary: This master dissertation analyses the relation between the Architecture and the Spirituality in the rebuilding of the Abbey of Saint-Denis (1130/1137-1144) led by Abbot Suger (1081- 1151), based on the remaining physical structure of the church and on his writings: On the consecration of the church of Saint-Denis and The [administrative] Work of Abbot Suger [of Saint-Denis]. For this, we took into consideration the theology of Pseudo-Dionysius the Areopagite, described in the treatises On the Divine Names and On the Celestial Hierarchy, in addition to some studies about Sugers work and life. When we compare the documents with the construction of the twelfth century, we acknowledge that art and architecture were means to transmit the Christian message, as it would support the spiritual exegesis devoted to God. A realization beyond the aesthetic contemplation. This view of art has become a landmark and served as inspiration for the great French Gothic cathedrals.
