Summary: This thesis proposes to analyze the artistic production of themed religious of Alfredo Volpi, considering relevant peripheral contexts, such as the socio-political situation of the time and the direct contact that the artist had with the frescoes of pre-Renaissance masters in their trip to Europe. Saints and Madonnas was a theme visited and revisited by Volpi for four consecutive decades, a fact which in itself leaves unequivocally disclose the interest of the artist in the subject. It is considered this one of the most relevant factors to justify this research within academic criteria, since it is notorius that Volpi did not do their research without other claims. Thus, it can be deduced that for the artist was much more at stake than just an unpretentious production of religious figures. These characters come your repertoire in the first five years of the 1930s starting his appearances, first as translations of traditional images - often strictly as ordered copies - and continue to be produced by the end of 1960. During this decade trajectory, these figures start to be of originality, reaching the final phase embedded the walls, flags and flagpoles to fully disappear from the scene. Despite the incipient nature of this research, it is considered that, within their means, there are conditions to create an environment conducive to further discussions, and may draw attention to an important artistic production that was definitely not analyzed up to its historical importance and cultural.
