Summary: This dissertation investigates the praxis of capixaba painter Regina Chulam, from 1975, when she started studying in London and also working with Fine Arts, until 2013, when she organized her first solo exhibition at Museu Vale, in Vila Velha, Espírito Santo. Since 1981, when she majored in Fine Arts – painting – from Escola Superior de Belas Artes de Lisboa (ESBAL), her life has been full of “comings and goings”, “matches and mismatches”, “searches and findings”. By organizing chronologically the way in which her work progressively developed and improved, this study analyses a pictorial space structured by the dynamics of lines and the expressive power of chromatic fabric, both established on the surface of the painting. This dissertation proposes a discussion about a creative experience, so we bring a theoretical background that includes the work of art from its essence, treating it as an occurrence, an aesthetic phenomenon. Each painting outlines on canvas a world made of colors and shapes, developed through the painter´s perception. Each painting is also a fragment of the world, the expression of an experience. The main focus of this research is to analyse the paintings (portraits, self-portraits, and especially landscapes) that emphasize their experiences of "two nationalities": the Brazilian one and the Portuguese one. Regina Chulam lives the immensity of the landscapes that surround her and, then, she makes her spectators live them through each one of her works of art. The colors and light are also important elements of study in this research. As Chulam rediscovers the tropical colors and light, she tries to integrate them with transparences and soft shades offered and inspired by the Lusitanian atmosphere. This text also approaches the importance of Aracê city to the development of Chulam´s works. After settling in the mountainous region of Espírito Santo, she started living an isolated life, totally dedicated to her one and only work: the pure pleasure of painting. There she developed a new art language by organizing the cool colors to highlight the warm colors composing a harmonic pictorial sonority. By taking this luminous landscape, this light without depth, Chulam raises the chromatic intensity of her paitings to the top, to make the beauty of the textures and the painting plans stand out, linked as in the most beautiful chords. With the help of interviews given by the artist, the exhaustive search for paintings that were scattered in private collections and also a constant dialogue with the history of modern painting, this dissertation aims to contribute to a better comprehension of this important capixaba artist´s production, understanding the piece of art as a revealer of a visible impression about the world.
