Summary: This paper is about an MA thesis, in the line of Heritage and Culture, with the title "Time Captured: The Outlooking Transformation of the Representation of the Downtown Vitória, in the Espírito Santo State in Brazil, from the Photographic Collection of the Municipal Public Archives." This work focuses on the photographic documentation of the transformation of the urban landscape of the Downtown Vitória that are presented in the collection of the Photographic Public Archives of Vitória. Its general purpose is to show how parts of the photographic archives that reveal aspects of the cultural and urbanistic heritage of the capital of Espirito Santo State, from the modes of seeing and capturing the urban landscape, forming part of the visual culture of the city in transformation, it emphasizes the importance of this material for the maintenance and retrieval of the memory of this city. For this, the study is based on a corpus formed by a set of photographs of buildings and places, envolved by a temporal delimitation (1910 – 1950), and a geographical delimitation of the Jerônimo Monteiro Avenue. Plans and projects of the capital envisioned in this period are used in the study. It is felt that these photographs of the early twentieth century reflect a progressive change in the way of seeing and representing the city, going from a typical visual approach of drawing and landscape painting of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries to a new look at a new perspective directed to the north side of the Vitória Island, as well as the improvement plans proposed in the period. It is seen that there is a change in the photographer's way of viewing as the developed plans for the capital are being implemented, proposing a new way to organize and aprehend the city, starting from the hypothesis that there is, thus, an expansion in the perception and representation of the city. This new mode of managing the city seems to generate a new relationship with the territory and automatically a change in the way of representing it; the photographer's look and the way of capturing the frames of the city from an expanded field of the represented space and urban landscape.
