Summary: Based on an analysis of the curatorial and institutional practices of the Rio Art Museum (MAR), this research aims to discuss the possibility of transforming museum institutions through contemporary curatorial approaches. Starting from an investigation into how art systems function, their devices, agents, and elements, this dissertation proposes a discussion of curatorial practice carried out under a dissident approach, including a brief historical contextualization and concepts related to curatorial projects developed in contemporary times. To support the topics examined in the curatorial work, the investigations chosen as inflection points are highlighted, such as Magiciens de la terre (1989), Information (1970), and “Primitivism” in 20th Century Art: Affinity of the Tribal and the Modern (1984-1985). Addressing themes such as otherness, gender, race, social and political issues, the proposals presented are related to questioning the hegemonic structure of institutions. These questions are interactive through reflection on the possibility of creating a decolonial museum.
