Summary: This dissertation addresses the current effects and future implications of the use of artificial intelligence in the field of visual arts. Drawing on critical theory, the study seeks to conceptualize artificial intelligence. Furthermore, the work is grounded in cultural studies, informed by linguistic and phenomenological perspectives, with reference to the works of Flusser, and Manovich, to analyze the social consequences of AI development. Special emphasis is placed on the thought of Vilém Flusser, whose framework supports a critical examination of both the affordances and the challenges posed by these technologies. In this context, the study highlights the asymmetry between users’ access to AI systems and their limited understanding of the underlying processes that govern them. It argues that such systems are frequently mobilized in the construction of technological myths that serve the economic interests of large private corporations, engaging with theoretical contributions from Benjamin, Machado, Pasquinelli, as well as Manovich and Flusser. The methodology includes bibliographic studies and the selection and analysis of works – a process termed here as critical curation – combined with image generation experiments using large generative AI models. The findings point to the need for a balanced and critical approach regarding the use of artificial intelligence, emphasizing the importance of preserving and developing human creativity.
