Summary: We investigated the action of memes as an instrument of social criticism of the virtual environment, focusing on the appropriation of works of art, as people, through the internet, are summoned, with memes, to include themselves in the context of images, through subjects of the daily life of the works that are assimilated with ours and, thus, experience a temporal nexus between historical events and other forms of expression of social life, present in cyberculture. We observe, in the memes of the Facebook profile @ArtesDepressão, that the appropriation and resignification of the paintings appears in the virtual environment in the form of entertainment and social criticism. In this process, we understand that the main basis for the purpose and construction of memes as a critical social tool finds support in multimodality, due to the insistent use and increasing massification of images by social networks. With the global infection of the Covid-19 virus, we observe in memes the dissemination of information and criticism on matters related to the social experience of the virus by appropriating works of art and resignifying them through multimodality and social networks, which allow the construction of meaning that allows the meme to provoke a social experience of dialogue and appropriation of works of art on the network. We propose, in this research, to analyze the context of three memes from the Facebook profile @ArtesDepressão, which appropriated the art images and re-signified their meaning in the Covid-19 theme, according to the situations experienced by the population.
