Summary: The present research aims to analyze the action the Art Gallery Álvaro Conde (GAAC) from 1986, the year it was reopened, and their contributions to the expansion of the repertoire of the plastic arts in the state. For this is a historical reading of the socioeconomic and cultural landscape of century XX, the Espírito Santo, and their dialogues with the public policies for art and culture. This study concentrated in a cycle of state exhibitions, between 1987 and 1988, and proposes a reflection on the exhibition, the gallery and his collection. To rescue the history of this space, it highlights its importance to the local scenery of the arts, as opposed to cultural isolation and unequal conditions of production and dissemination of arts in the Espírito Santo, when compared to other states the country.
