Summary: With attention on the writings of the artist, this research investigates and analyzes the recurring narratives in the production of Brazilian artist Cildo Meireles, as the artist claims orality as an ideal support for the work of art. For such analysis, we chose works that were consistent with this proposition, which includes: Study for Space (1969), Virtual Spaces: Corners (1967-1968), Meshes of Freedom (1976-1977), Insertions into Ideological Circuits (1970), Eureka/Blindhotland (1970-1975), Red Shift (1967-1984), Through (1983-1989), Mission/Missions (How to Build Cathedrals) (1987) and Disappearing Element/Disappeared Element (2002). The narrated stories echo in interviews and in comments from critics, as an extension of his artwork, without being explanatory. On such narratives, the poetic language is diverse and works as: instructions, biography of works, texts, drawings, designs, inserts and story-concept. The complex relationship between the text and the art object subverts and articulates alternative ways between the sensorial and the conceptual with a formal elegance. With its own power, and also as an element in the overall production of the artist, the narratives are different in nature and range from literature to life experiences, as well as from historical to social facts. Here we show how these narratives connect with the work, and seek elements that emerge from them and are expressed in a multisensorial universe.
