Summary: This dissertation intends to inventory, study and locate, when possible, the images belonging to the former convent of São Francisco de Vitoria. It is also our intention to verify the original disposal of these images as well as their migration and remittances to other spaces, investigating both the Franciscan presence in the city of Vitória and its implications for secular religiosity in the state of Espírito Santo. Therefore, it is necessary to study the history of Franciscans since their installation in the state (so called Capitania) in the sixteenth century until the decline of the Order at the end of the nineteenth century, which led to the demolition of the convent. Of great importance, in this sense, is the analysis of relations between the Franciscans and lay
religious associations, and between the Franciscans and the diocese, established in 1895. With the demolition of the convent, the images originally located in the church of São Francisco, in the chapel of São Francisco da Penitência da Ordem Terceira and in the chapel of Nossa Senhora das Neves, built in the land of the Franciscans, were dispersed. Many were lost, but to others, we could establish the WHEREabouts thanks to this research.
Besides the research on the location of Franciscan images, it is also crucial to know and analyze them according to their relationship with the secular religion of people in the state of Espírito Santo over the centuries, focusing on the powers, functions and uses of images, notably in processions and other religious festivities. With this study, we believe to have given a contribution to the upgrading of the historical and artistic patrimony of Espírito Santo and to the development of research on religious images in the state.
