Summary: The controversy and crisis of values in early 20th century art, related to the questioning of artistic production at the time, considered academic and mimesis of European standards, led artists and intellectuals from Brazil to a debate in defense of an art that represented the our culture, our country and its context. This study will show the life and work of Vieira da Cunha, a capixaba intellectual, living in Rio de Janeiro in the 1920s and his effort to create a legitimate Brazilian art. In order to have a better understanding of his works, we will consider the historical and cultural moment that was produced and his relations with the process of cultural emancipation of Brazil in that period.
