Summary: Based on the art of the Africans, this study proposes a reflection on traditional and contemporary sculpture based on the aesthetic developments contemplated in the works of some African contemporary artists. It seeks to develop a sensitive and critical understanding of new approaches in the language of sculpture in Angola, in particular the works of the Angolan sculptor Pedro Pires (1978, Luanda). It seeks with these works to identify issues and / or aspects that allow dialogue in the discussion of sculpture, relying on "certain aspects" presented in texts by the historian and critic of Art Rosalind Krauss. In these texts the author presents an instigating critique, showing how the language of sculpture of the second half of the twentieth century had expanded, encompassing new forms of representation of the object, work, space and spectator - breaking with the precepts of the traditional art of sculpture. In view of this, in the last decades several Angolan and / or African artists have been dedicated to multiple researches developing new dialogues, new poetics in the creation of the sculpture, valuing more and more the creative freedom of the artist, its relation with the work, space and "Society". Its productions reflect a rupture with the traditionalism of the sculpture giving opening to new possibilities of thinking and making sculpture. On the other hand, it is worth mentioning that this research also seeks to contribute in
some way to the dissemination and visibility of the artistic production of African authors and not only, it aims to supplement gaps in relation to the issues intrinsic to the proposed theme. Finally, it constitutes a contribution in compliance with Federal Law 10.639 / 03 and 11645/08, which decrees the teaching of Afro-Brazilian history and culture, the history of Africa and Africans.
