Summary: Tomie Ohtake's painting stands out in her work as the way she mostly expressed herself. Guided by an incessant search, she goes through different periods, distinct anxieties, having covered little more than sixty years of production. The discussion elicited in this dissertation chooses paintings of the phases: "blind", "color fields", "architectures", "curves", "circles" and "monochrome". Our objective is to develop a theoretical research that raises subjective and objective questions of the artist's work, in order to explore its space. The research has as objective an analysis of the gesture, of the form and the color, inseparable plastic elements and revealing of its poetics. The theoretical support, made through a bibliographical review, was associated to interlocutions with its critical criticism, aiming the understanding of the questions raised. The contact in loco with the work, made possible to check relevant details in the analysis of some works. Approaches to paradigmatic movements of modern art and specific artists were made, attempting to establish punctual dialogues. Associated with Informal Abstraction, the artist tangents to the Geometric strand, iyet it follows a singular path, in which the informal and a biomorphic geometry merge into an amalgam. Her painting, in many moments, seems to manifest a singular connection between East and West, and to undertake a diligent search for the plastic synthesis.
Key words: Tomie Ohtake. Painting. Gesture, Form and Color.
