Summary: This thesis explores issues of translation and contemporary artistic practices thought in a site specific way, investigating if it is possible to create a parallel between the translation process and the appropriation process of a site to create an artwork. In order to do so, important issues about the changes that happened into the art field at the end of 1950s were studied, as well as a short historical research about questions inherent of the local and the emergence of site specific practices. The challenges involving translation were debated through theories concerning the translation process, just as translation studies thought in a free way. The translation concept, therefore, was expanded and, to this research, it was thought beyond linguistic fields, working with different discourses. To this thesis, the translator was considered as a creator of a new work, so, it was possible to relate the translation with contemporary artistic practices known as site specific, observing the site as a discursive local. In the same way that an artist appropriates a site to think in his work, having the chance to
explore different discourses into the same art piece, translators can also focus in
appropriate different contexts to create their translations. From this initial theoretical research, was proposed to seek two contemporary artists to analyze their work - Raquel Garbelotti and Antoni Muntadas - so it was possible to investigate how artiststranslators, that think in a site specific way, create their work.
